Developing alternative energy sources and building a sustainable future will take ideas from many disciplines. At WPI, researchers are developing lighter materials that can improve the fuel efficiency of vehicles. They are looking for ways to boost the production of biofuels. They are laying the groundwork for a new type of hybrid vehicle that uses hydraulics instead of batteries. And they are advancing wind energy in ways large and small–making power with kites, creating more durable parts for turbines, and helping windmills do double duty as active filters of power harmonics.
